(ZD NET)) Intel announced Thursday that chip sales are on track for the current third quarter, after an extremely rocky first half of the year. The Santa Clara, Calif.-based chipmaker issued a midquarter update stating that quarterly revenue will be within previously stated estimates between $6.2 billion and $6.8 billion but will fall toward the low end of the range. Meanwhile, Intel's third-quarter gross margins will also meet expectations but will be on the lower end of the range, Intel said. The company predicted margins of 47 percent, plus or minus a couple of points.

(CNET) Amid a weak market for pricey black-and-white handhelds, Handheld maker Palm has quietly slashed the price of its Palm m500 handheld to $329, a $70 drop. The black-and-white cousin of the color m505 has lagged greatly in sales compared with the color model, according to several analysts. Both models were introduced in the spring, with the m505 selling for $50 more, at $449.

Whether you're planning to go with an Athlon or a P4, this is as good a time as any to buy a processor. With last week's huge price drops on P4's and this week's smaller ones finally making them more cost-competitive, it'll be hard for all but the most die-hard AMD fans to not at least consider going with a P4 platform.

(Reuters) The Bush administration shifted strategy in the landmark Microsoft Corp. antitrust case on Thursday, dropping the push to break up the company in order to get other sanctions against the software giant "as quickly as possible.'' In abandoning the previous administration's line of attack in the three-year-old case, the U.S. Justice Department also said it would not pursue an unresolved claim that Microsoft Corp. illegally tied its Internet Explorer browser to its Windows operating system.

(Reuters) Hewlett-Packard Co. unveiled a handheld 'computer on Thursday featuring a combination of Intel components and Microsoft software that the company says makes the pocket-sized device nearly comparable to bulkier laptops. The Jornada 560 series is the first HP handheld to feature a low-power processor from Intel Corp. and the first in the market to include Microsoft's new handheld operating system, expected to become the standard configuration for the next generation of handheld PCs as those devices increasingly compete for business users. The new Jornada line includes Intel Corp.'s low-power StrongARM processor and the companies StrataFlash memory. HP and Intel also said they will work together to bring voice and wireless communication applications to future handheld devices.
