[ZDNET] IBM on Monday shrunk the price of its smallest hard drive, the Microdrive. The Microdrive is a one-inch hard drive that acts as removable storage and fits into a CompactFlash Type II slot found in consumer gadgets such as digital cameras, MP3 players and handheld computers. IBM cut prices by as much as 32 percent. The company lowered the price of its 1GB drive to $379. The 512MB version now costs $259, and the 340MB version is $199. The cuts come as more manufacturers are beginning to support the Microdrive, IBM spokesman Michael Kuptz said.

[Yahoo News] Apple has sent out a coupon to all members of its iTools service. The coupon gives the holder a $25 discount on their next purchase of $249 or more from the online Apple Store. The coupon is valid through September 17, 2001 and can only be redeemed at the online Apple Store. According to the terms and conditions, this offer is not valid on the Apple Store for Education Individuals, Apple Store for Education Institutions, Apple Store for Resellers, Apple Store for Canada, Apple Store for Canada Reseller, Apple Store for International locations, any online custom store sponsored by Apple, or Apple retail locations.

(Reuters) - Quintiles Transnational Corp., a provider of pharmaceutical testing services, said on Tuesday it would cut 1,000 jobs and take a charge of $50 million in the third-quarter, in a restructuring plan aimed at streamlining operations. More than 400,000 job cuts have been announced in the last few months as companies around the world wrestle with slowing growth and plunging demand. The following is a list of job cuts announced recently by some of the biggest companies. Telecommunications contributed around half of the overall losses. The table shows the date when the cuts were announced and only includes layoffs of 1,000 or more. [View table]
