ok liek i just went to bestbuy and there was this box that said "cable modem" on it so i asked my dad to give me 250 dollars to buy it and i bought oit. ok well when i got home i took the modem out of teh box and screwed in one of those thuck cable thingys to it now it wont connect to aol!!! so i just wanted all of my dads money and now he is mad at me cause it wont work. what do i dooo???

Well first, you gotta configure your computer to be able to use it, its not all just plug-n-play. You also gotta call someone like Qwest or Roadrunner or whoever over there supports some kind of broadband and have them hook to your house. Do you also have a NIC to plug the modem into ???

Basically you gotta shop around and what you did sounded quite impulsive to me, who makes the modem ???

What made you think you could get free internet just by plugging in a cable modem into a wall outlet? You have subscribe to the cable internet service and pay for it just like any other normal ISP.
You might as well pack that thing back up and hope that Best Buy will give you the money back.

On top of your cable box rental fee you also need to pay for internet service provider. What exactly did you cable company say to you ? Did they hook up your cable modem for you? They normaly give you one of there cable modems to u (for rent). Normaly when you sign up for DSL they charge you $100 for sign up and instal and like $30 a month just for there service. They also put some weird a** box next to your phone disconect for the RG6 Quad to go to your CAT 5 E phone wire.
These prices are not for roughing in your new phone wire or running you RG 6 to your inside dissconect. If its outside they run there own new RG 6 to the dissconect.

If you went and bought your own cable modem take it back and get your money. Because for the price of that sucker you can pay for your hookup. but you will still be stuck with your $30 rent on modem and $20 for internet.

This has got to be a joke.

First of all, there are all sorts of commercials for broadband internet service. He (or his dad) had to see at least one of those commercials. I know that those commercials don't say, "Get a cable modem and surf for free".

Second, $250 for a cable modem is way too much. I paid $190 for mine (Motorola SURFboard Cable Modem).

Maybe you should have considered asking the questions before buying the cable modem. My suggestion (and basically the only thing you can do at this point) is to put it back in the box and take it back to Best Buy and try to get your money back. Then change your name on the forums here so people won't laugh at you next time you post a question.

Part of these steps are to exaggerate some facts involved with broadband availability. It seems to help actually. I actually have to take therapy because of the emotional damages broadband has caused me. Luckily, my HMO covers it.

i use Verizon DSL. And yes, its just a flat rate of $40. . Its 32.25 for the DSL line, but they have a nice ISP for only 7.75$... so im using that, and its just great dude. All you do, is just sign up over the phone, wait for the modem to arrive (2-3 weeks), then for the service to be activated (about a week after you get the modem). Its that simple, its great.

Yea, about the range thing. Its better if your closer to one of the network hubs. Hte big green phone boxes. Im about 250 ft from mine, so i get peak bandwidth. . Its very reliable.
