Flight Simulator 2002 to be released this Friday.
By Digital Froggy October 16, 2001, 02:11 AM

Very awesome. I've heard nothing but good things about this game. Framerates have been improved dramatically compared to FS2000. It will even have live ATC! How cool is that!? Now I'm waiting for Phoenix Simulation Software to release their new Airbus series.

    By Blizzard October 16, 2001, 04:16 AM

I'm wondering if I should set this game on my "must-have" list, but what are the recommended system requirements, haven't these flight simulators always had insane requirements ?

How hard is it to fly the planes anyway? Is it hard ?

Hell yeah. I can get fs2000 to run with med. to med.+ detail settings with pretty good fps on an original geforce DDR. 2002 will have mad requirements though.

Actually, FS2002 will be less hardware hungry than FS2000. People that run FS2000 now with no problems will be able to run FS2002 with better performance.

FS2000 was a poorly designed game. The weird thing about it is that FS2000 is more dependant on the processor than on the video card. Even with a powerful system the game still has crappy framerates and stutters a lot.

FS2002 is based on a different type of graphics engine. According to most beta testers it now runs with a smooth fluid motion. Good framerates and no stutters.

It all depends on how in depth you want to get with it. There are a lot of great add-ons out there. The freeware add-ons are good but the payware add-ons rock! I purchased a Boeing 747-400 along with a panel and sounds from Phoenix Simulation Software. All I have to say is that it gets pretty real! The autopilot is a great tool to help newbies like me fly. I am becoming less dependant on it though. The manual that I dowloaded to learn how to operate the panel, plane and autopilot was 64 pages long! That should give you an idea on how real it is. If you want to play this game you better get ready to learn some of the basics of aviation and navigation. Also, all flights are in real time. I flew a Boeing 747 from Minneapolis to Hawaii and it took 8 hours! Flight Simulator is a great game. You should seriously think about getting it.

LMAO! My bro says the same thing. I guess I'm just one of those that really enjoys "reality" games. I like all the technical shit that comes along with flying an airplane.

I agree with you about flight sim depth. It's a whole different type of application. More like a training manual really than a game. An FPS jock may not understand this. Having been trained to be a commercial pilot in real-life, I take any complex addition to MS FS I can get. It's basically a visual encyclopedia if you really wan't to stretch it. Personally, I haven't found a legitimate reason to upgrade to 2002 from 2000 though. IMO 98 was better than 2000. I found it more user freindly, personally.

By Digital Froggy October 19, 2001, 02:42 AM

I guess the major reason I want to upgrade to FS2002 is because the framerates are WAY better than FS2000. This is what all the beta testers have been saying. Plus, it has live ATC along with an AI system that puts other air traffic in the skies. FS2002 is gonna rock! I know it!

BTW, you said you trained to be a commercial pilot? What airline did you train with? I've been thinking about going back to school to be a pilot.

    By GARRIN19 October 19, 2001, 02:55 AM

Trained in college. I've been to Confederation in Thunderbay and Seneca in Toronto. I'll skip the details beyond that.

I've heard about the speed advantage with 2002, but I have this serious hang-up about extra CD's lying around. Try to squeeze out every-bit of use I can with everything I buy. The change in frame-rates would have to be pretty dramatic for me to upgrade. My 550r in the sig with the TNT2 and Voodoo2 really stuttered like crazy, until I got the new hardware. Quite annoying. Even at 1GHz and the V7100 my harddrive still makes that, "let me finish chewing before I swallow sound."

Now how much is this going to cost?

I paid $74.45 for the copy I picked up today. That's the professional version. I think the standard version is only $54 or something around there.

What do you think about it so far?

    By Triton October 20, 2001, 10:16 AM

Don't think I would ever come off the runway with that game. I would just become angry and reach for the key to release my missiles!

It's great! A big improvement from FS2000. Scenery and framerates are wonderful. Plus, live ATC makes it much more real.

LMAO! Taking off is easy. Landing is the tricky part. I haven't prefected my skills but I'm getting better.

Got it, good then that I never come away, cause that is stopping me from even trying to land, hehe.

    By gateways_rule October 20, 2001, 08:45 PM

I picked up the standard copy today for $54. I wasn't going to pay $20 for the professional version. You can't crash into buildings anymore probably because of Sept. 11. Oh well.

Where'd you get it? And whats the difference between the pro version and the std. version?

The Pro version has a program called Gmax which can be used to edit scenery and aircraft. Also, the Pro version includes more panel guages and bit more detailed scenery. Plus, it costs more. I think it's well worth it.

That's where I got mine too. Just walked into the store last Friday and shelled out 75 bones for it.

I have to admit, that is slightly impressive. It's hard to believe "that" is supposed to run faster. The mountain texturing, shading and lighting. I remember FS2000 didn't even come with shadows, unless you downloaded the patch. It makes you wonder sometimes wether MS is thinking marketing before quality even when it comes to a game sometimes...Still looks good from here though.

    By Xeratul October 24, 2001, 03:11 PM

Yes, you can also watch some vidios of the game... http://www.microsoft.com/games/fs2002/visuals.asp and chose one of the vidios there... But I dont download them, I have only streamed some of them, becouse it takes long time with ISDN to download them.
