Reporting live from this year's MACWORLD in New York city, we took a quick look at Apple's new notebook- the iBook. You can have your own translucent candy colored laptop for only $1599! For an Apple PowerBook, that's actually darn cheap. The iBook should sell like water in the desert.

  • 300-MHz PowerPC G3 processor (Plenty fast. Think 350 MHz Pentium II)
  • 512K backside level 2 cache on processor module
  • 66-MHz system bus; 66-MHz memory bus
  • Integrated floating-point unit and 64K on-chip level 1 cache (32K data and 32K instruction)
  • 32MB of SDRAM (supports up to 160MB of RAM)
  • 3.2GB IDE hard disk drive
  • Built-in 24x-speed (maximum) CD-ROM drive
  • One USB port
  • Built-in 10/100BASE-T Ethernet
  • Built-in 56K KFlex/V.90 modem
  • Optional 11-MBS Air Port wireless networking card (IEE 802.11 DSSS compliant)
  • (This, in concert with an Air Port Hardware Access Point, allows you to keep your iBook on your network from as far as 150 feet away.)
  • Single built-in mono speaker
  • 16-bit stereo sound output mini-jack (To cut costs, and because few use it, there is no sound input.)
  • ATI RAGE Mobility graphics controller with 2X AGP and 4MB of SDRAM (With this slow and steady graphics chip, iBook owners will be playing Quake II in software mode.)
  • 12.1-inch (diagonal) 800x600 TFT SVGA active-matrix display
  • Lithium-ion battery; 45-watt-hour. Up to 6 hours of battery life.
  • Width: 13.5 inches (34.4 cm)
  • Height: 11.6 inches (29.4 cm)
  • Average depth: 1.8 inches (4.6 cm); depth ranges from 1.24 inches (3.15 cm) at the thinnest point to 2.06 inches (5.2 cm) at the thickest point
  • Weight: 6.7 pounds (3.0 kg)
