For those of you back in from the office and due a quickie (not that kind of quickie, silly), we have something that might be of interest. It could be the current contender for undisputed "Quake III: Arena" (ever heard of it? Something to do with Paul Steed me thinks…) frame rate champion. It is powered by the NVIDIA GeForce2 GTS chip, which needs little introduction. But in case you were on holiday in Ibiza when the chip was released a few weeks ago, you can check here for more in-depth coverage of the technology involved. For the rest of you already in the know, let the benchmarks begin.

    The Box Shot

In the red corner, weighing in at 800 million pixels per second (Mpps) is a 64MB GeForce2 GTS hailing by the name of "3D Prophet II GTS 64 MB". In the blue corner we have a shipping 3dfx Voodoo5 5500 all raring to go, weighing in at 667Mpps fill-rate. And just for reference sake, we threw in a 32MB DDR GeForce2 GTS for good measure .To make things even more interesting, we used the current fastest PC we have for 3D gaming at the SE labs, the AMD Athlon "Thunderbird" 1GHz.
