The Voodoo2 has been out since mid-February this year and yet some nine months later the price has plummeted down to as a little as a third of its original launch price of approximately $299. Buying a Voodoo2 is no longer something that the average end-user cannot afford. We're sure most of you have already heard about the recent Voodoo2 price slashes in our daily news. For $99 you can pick up a single 12MB Voodoo2 board from Guillemot or indeed for a bit more from A-Trend at $125 (and less where available). If you're willing to go the distance then for $199.99 you can just as easily pick up an SLI configuration, which will still give you the fastest overall 3D performance on the block. No longer is buying the Voodoo2 an expensive option but that doesn't mean it's not longer a 'lucrative' one. Any test machine that we ever use to review games and/or hardware is always fully charged with a dual Voodoo2 configuration. As amazing as this sounds, in terms of price, the Voodoo Banshee now retails for less than $99 and the TNT as low as $159. So you've got some serious choices. If you crave speed then a Voodoo2 SLI option is the way to go. If you crave image quality and already have a fast enough CPU to drive the TNT then that will possibly seem like the more lucrative choice. And if you've already got a decent enough 2D card but have a CPU slower than or equal to a Pentium II 300Mhz, then opting for a Voodoo2 will still give you the best bang for you buck. The Helios 3D Voodoo2 isn't the prettiest on the block but it does the job asked of it and is one of the cheaper Voodoo2 boards currently available (if you can find it that is). One place I did manage to find is A-Trend's US sales line (they have an office in Freemont), which is open 9am-5pm so you can always give it a try on (510) 226-6290 or indeed their toll free number (800) 866-0188.
· A cheap no-nonsense Voodoo2
· You can play Glide games
· 90Mpixels/sec is fast enough for today and 180Mpixels is still the best yet.
· Hard to find
· It might be a Voodoo2 alright but pretty on the presentation side, pretty it 'ain't
