  • As you may have guessed, the ECS P6IWT-A+ V2.0 motherboard is of the integrated variety, featuring the new Intel 810E chipset. The "E" at the end of the 810 stands for "Enhanced" and offers a few improvements over the original Intel 810 chipset.

    Foremost on the list is support for 66/100/133 front-side bus speeds, allowing the widest range of Intel CPU compatibility. Intel also added a specific 4 MB display cache to the i810E's Graphics and Memory Controller Hub (GMCH) to enhance 2D and 3D graphics performance. The original 810 did not have any display cache and had to rely totally on system memory for graphics use. The newer i810E still requires system memory, but the additional 4 MB of 32-bit display cache works much like the L2 cache of a CPU, enhancing the transfers to and from main system memory.

    What surprised me most about i810E is its relative wealth of 2D and 3D features. The i810E chipset features integrated Intel 3D graphics, and the video controller hub itself has an integrated 24-bit, 230 MHz RAMDAC and is based on Direct AGP technology. The i810E's 2X AGP GMCH supports DirectX and features a full OpenGL ICD. It also has multi-texture support when used with OpenGL and DirectX 6 or higher.

    While the i810E's integrated video does an adequate job of performing basic duties, it does come with some negatives. The 2D resolutions are limited to a 24-bit color depth with 1280x1024 being the highest supported true color resolution. The 1600x1200 resolution is supported, but only at 256 colors. 3D support is even less, with a screen resolution limit of 1024x768 at 16-bit color.
