  • Now that everything is plugged in, you can now install the software from the CD. You have the option of installing the Palm Desktop which is Palm's PIM (Personal Information Manager). While not the best PIM I've ever used, it is very functional and can get the job done.

I prefer using Outlook 2000 as my PIM however, and Palm has included PocketMirror software which is the conduit that allows Outlook to talk to the Palm Vx. Again, it is very easy to set up from the install CD. Once this is installed you'll be able to update your Palm with all of your Outlook contacts, appointments and emails. The update worked flawlessly for me and gave me a great headstart in using the Vx.

HotSyncing is the term used for synchronizing the PC data with your Palm Vx data and is performed by pressing a button on the HotSync cradle. Again, it is a very easy process and no interaction is required aside from pressing the button. Although the USB interface claims to be faster, I did not notice any sort of speed difference by using the USB HotSync interface versus the standard serial interface. The amount of time spent HotSyncing can be anywhere from under one minute to as long as five minutes or more, especially if you use the AvantGo web clipping service, subscribe to a lot of channels and are on a slow internet connection.

Now if you've never used Outlook for anything but email, you will definitely change that when you buy a Palm. Many people don't use Outlook's calendar because they aren't at their computer all the time. It's very hard to bring your desktop PC with you when scheduling that next dentist's appointment. However, it is very easy to bring your Palm Vx with you, write your appointment down and then have it HotSync to your PC.

If you aren't familiar with the Palm, you're probably wondering how you can enter data into the unit without a ‘real' keyboard. Although you can buy a keyboard for an additional $100, there are two other ways to enter data directly into the Palm Vx. The first way is using the on-screen keyboard and you tap in your information using the stylus on the keyboard. It is functional, but slow.

The best way to enter data is by using the graffiti software. Graffiti is a shorthand style of the English alphabet, but may take some getting used to. For example, to enter the letter “a,” you will enter what looks like an upside down "v." Once you're familiar with it, it becomes very easy to use and you may even have to be careful that you don't write like that in everyday situations. \
